PC World's online arm has taken a potshot at Magic: The Gathering recently in an article entitled "The World's Geekiest Tournaments." The piece looks at a number of "the world's dorkiest contests" and singles out Magic in particular. Here's what they had to say about the world's first TCG:
"Magic: The Gathering is sort of like Dungeons & Dragons in card form. You use the powers provided by different cards to damage your enemy in various ways--for instance, you can attack your opponent using dragon armies or fireball spells. The Magic World Championship is held once a year in various cities around the world. It provides a nifty bonding experience for people who spend the majority of their disposable income on pieces of paper with pictures of dwarf princesses printed on them, and who enjoy sitting for countless hours in what appears to be the world's largest middle-school lunchroom."
The blurb leaves out the millions of dollars given out over the history of the Pro Tour and even tries to pass off a Yugioh card as a Magic card. Why a magazine that covers computers and makes its bread and butter appealing to geek culture would want to take a crack at pigeonholing gamers through a poorly researched article remains to be seen...
