Via press release Thursday Wizards of the Coast announced it would be donating up to $22,000 to the Child's Play charity run by Penny Arcade. According to the release:

"We are pleased to announce Wizards of the Coast’s pledge to donate up to $22,000 to Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play organization in honor of the Magic 2011 launch.  The Child’s Play organization, which provides game materials to children in hospitals, is made strong by the compassionate gaming community that surrounds it, so we are challenging our players to support this special organization and exciting launch event."

The donations are based on attendance at the Magic 2011 Prerelease to be held this weekend. Charitable donations will break down in the following fashion:

40,000 players: $11,000

41,000 players: $12,100

42,000 players: $13.200

43,000 players: $14,300

44,000 players: $15,400

45,000 players: $16,500

46,000 players: $17,600

47,000 players: $18,700

48,000 players: $19,800

49,000 players: $20,900

50,000 players: $22,000

The total, capped at $22,000, is perhaps one way Wizards will give back to the community after a banner year for their flagship product, Magic: The Gathering.

Penny Arcade, the group behind the charity, began as a web comic and since has festooned into a geek oasis including the largest for-fans gaming expo in the world, the Penny Arcade Expo. You can visit them at PennyArcade.com.
